Election behind increased Boko Haram attacks in Nigeria – US

The United States says the increased spate of attacks by Boko Haram, could be due to the upcoming general elections in February.
However, the US advises that the February 14 presidential election should go ahead in spite of the violence.
During a daily briefing on Wednesday, January 14, the US State Department spokesperson, Marie Harf said: “There has been a sharp escalation in the number of reported casualties. We do believe the election is a factor.”
Harf stated that Boko Haram had in the past, used events such as elections to build up tensions in the country.
“Boko Haram has tended to, particularly around something like an election, use political issues or sensitivities to try to flame tensions.”
“We have seen that as one of their tactics and that is why it is so important to move forward with the election, because we believe it is important,” Harf added.
