The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has recovered for a an American woman, Margaret Sanders, a sum of $2000(N367,000) from a Nigerian fraudster.
Sanders was conned the said sum by Benjamin Akugbe, in an internet romance scam.
The commission released a statement, disseminating the development on Wednesday, January 14, through its spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, who stated that Sanders filed a petition on July 9, 2013 regarding the scam.
Sanders, apparently entered into a relationship on Facebook, with Akugbe, who claimed to be Benny Brown from Warri, Delta State, with both agreeing to get married.
The statement said: “According to her, the suspect in the course of the affair, requested for the sum of $2000.00USD to enable him join her in United States of America.”
“She subsequently wired the money to him through Western Union, into an account with the name, Gladdys Ikpoba domiciled with a new generation bank.”
However, her supposed fiancee never showed up, and “Sanders came to the sad realisation that she had been duped. But her efforts to recover the money were unsuccessful until she petitioned the EFCC.”
The Commission responded to her petition by carrying out an investigation, which led to the recovery of the money, which has since been returned to the victim.
