Benzema snubbed Manchester United for Real Madrid – Aulas

The striker was hot property after coming through the ranks at Lyon, and the club's president claims he rejected a more lucrative offer to move to Santiago Bernabeu Karim Benzema snubbed a move to Manchester United to join Real Madrid in 2009, according to Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas.

The France international was one of the most sought after strikers In Europe after coming through the ranks at his boyhood club and scoring 37 Ligue 1 goals in 72 games between 2007-09.

United had sold Cristiano Ronaldo in a world- record £80 million deal and were keen to spend part of their windfall on Benzema, offering a more lucrative package, but the striker had his heart set on Madrid.

"For a long time he wanted to play for Real Madrid, and when things began to fall into place we did not object,"

Aulas told Canal+. "Manchester United's offer was superior, but he was given the opportunity to go where he wanted."

United ended the summer transfer window with the free transfer of Michael Owen and the acquisition of Mame Biram Diouf for a small fee from Molde.
